cabin #1

So, the idea is to put a container cabin inside of a polycarbonate greenhouse. The Swedish call this a naturhaus.

We'll start on it this year, hopefully buying the container. We're looking at a 20 foot, which will include a bedroom, bathroom, and living/kitchen. Over this, we'll build a 48'x32' barn-style greenhouse.

Two Fandom Things

Because I missed* most of the fall and year-end gift exchanges, I signed up for [community profile] fandomtrees for the first time ever. For those who are interested, my tree is here.

(*I was in Japan, thus missing both fall deadlines and nominations-and-signups for year-end exchanges. I keep meaning to post about Japan, but my first attempt got eaten, and I haven't had the wherewithal to make a second attempt yet.)

~

However! Much to my pleasure, I was able to pick up some pinch-hits for [community profile] ficinabox when I got back! I've got multiple things in that collection, if anyone wants to root around and have a look for them.

It's all Idiosyncracy, All the Way Down

An anon on tumblr asked me about my writing habits, and since half of my writing community is over here, I thought I'd cross-post the question and answer, in case it's interesting to anyone else.

would you be willing to elaborate on your writing routine? you seem like a very consistent writer, and as someone who's not, i'm always curious how people approach their writing. do you set aside a particular amount of time/word goal/just go with the flow? do you have a single piece that you'll work on or does it jump around? do you have a way to push through writer's block or do you take a break? feel free to say as much or as little as you want ofc, but i've just been curious after seeing the few things you've said on here about it, and i'm trying to get better about my own writing routine 😅

(Side note: does anyone know if DW has markdown code for adding a cut? Copying from tumblr to DW would have been a lot easier with it...)

Riverwood update

There is damn little to update. We didn't do much at all this year. And all of that has to do with money. We got the backhoe, so there's that. Actually, that was a pre' big deal. And now the road is fixed, so we can get the backhoe out to the property.

With the backhoe, we can dig a significant hole to start the shallow well. And with next year's taxes, we'll be able to put up the pole barn. Then we'll be done, money-wise. I'm saving up to take a two-week period off, to camp in the early autumn. We'll use that time to build the hugelkulture and lasagna beds, if we haven't got to them yet. And start on the Hobbit House.

This spring, I'll be buying our first apple trees, as well as the Italian plums and paw-paws. We'll nursery them at Geriann's place. I'm going to start with eight trees: Macintosh, Honeycrisp, Daybreak Fuji, William's Pride, Calville Blanc d Hiver, Brown Crofton, Liberty, and Stayman winesap. This week I'm ordering the Williams Pride; no real reason, just what picked.

While they're in nursery, I'll chart when they bloom. I really should get two of each, to better hedge against some of them not making it. When I bought the sugar maples, white oaks, and hazelnuts, about 1/4 of them didn't make it. And we'll see how those do after this winter.

It's giving giving tuesday

For this week, for everyone who makes a donation to the BIJAN Beyond Bond & Legal Defense Fund, I will write a drabble about some character or show I know enough about to write. Since I've only written one fic since 2014 it's going to be rough, but BIJAN desperately needs the money and I'm going to try.

The Beyond Bond & Legal Defense Fund (the Bond Fund) raises money for immigration bonds to free people in ICE prisons in Massachusetts and Rhode Island or those detained elsewhere who are from or returning to MA.

Donate.

Tell me you made a donation and give me a prompt! If I don't know the source material we can negotiate.

(If you can't give money to a US org, make a donation to an org in your country that helps refugees and undocumented migrants stay.)
